Best Workplaces for CommutersSM From Colleges and UniversitiesOn May 22, 2006, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency—the organization that created the Best Workplaces for Commuters designation and defined the National Standard of Excellence—released a list of Best Workplaces for CommutersSM from colleges and universities. The list included 72 institutions of higher education that earned this prestigious designation. A place on the list distinguishes these institutions as environmental leaders that improve air quality, save energy, and reduce traffic congestion in their communities. The colleges and universities on this exclusive list offer their employees an outstanding commuter benefits package that saves these institutions money, reduces parking demand, and improves the quality of life for their employees, students, and the residents in their surrounding communities. The "Chronicle of Higher Education" covered this story in their May 26, 2006 issue and highlighted a range of commuter benefits offered. These include transit and bus passes, vanpools, campus shuttles, access to an Emergency Ride Home program, and financial incentives for staff who live close to campus and forego a parking permit as well as supporting benefits such as bike lockers and showers.
